BURLINGTON, VT — 2021 Vermont Lake Monster catcher and Futures League Top Prospect Ethan Anderson was selected in the second round (61st pick overall) of the 2024 Major League Baseball draft by the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday, while 2022 FCBL Pitcher of the Year Sean Matson was taken in 9th round by the Cleveland Guardians Wednesday and Anthony Stephan ’21 in the 13th round by the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday.
The recipient of the 2021 Racine MVP award, Anderson hit .427 (41-for-96) with 25 runs, eight doubles, five homers and 32 RBI in only 29 games for the Lake Monsters that summer.
Anderson has spent the last three seasons at the University of Virginia, hitting .341 (227-for-666) with 173 runs, 58 doubles, 28 homers and 145 RBI in 178 career games. This spring he was an ACC first-team selection after hitting .331 with 67 runs, 20 doubles, eight homers and 40 RBI.
Drafted on the same day that the Lake Monsters honored Anderson’s 2021 Futures League head coach Pete Wilk by retiring his #45 Vermont jersey, he is the highest pick among the seven Vermont players to be drafted during the team’s FCB-era.
Matson went 5-2 with a 1.61 ERA in nine starts for Vermont during the 2022 season, allowing 14 runs (8 earned) on 33 hits with just 5 walks and 68 strikeouts over 44 2/3 innings. This spring at Harvard, he went 3-3 with a 3.25 ERA (63.2 IP, 53 H, 27 R, 23 ER, 27 BB, 77 SO) in 11 starts.
Stephan hit .260 (25-for-96) with 26 runs, nine doubles, three homers and 17 RBI in 29 games for the Lake Monsters during their 2021 FCBL championship season. At Virginia this spring, he hit .306 (41-for-134) with 28 runs, 10 doubles, two homers and 23 RBI in 45 games.
