BURLINGTON, VT — Brockton starter Myles McDermott allowed just one hit over the first five innings and the Rox built a 6-2 lead before holding off the Vermont Lake Monsters 6-5 in Futures League action Monday afternoon at historic Centennial Field.
McDermott walked Cooper O’Brien (Vergennes, VT/Colby Sawyer) followed by a Tommy Googins (Princeton) single and another walk to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first. Vermont was able to plate just one of the runners on a one-out Chone James (Virginia) sacrifice fly as McDermott retired 11 straight batters into the fifth inning.
The Rox scored three times in the third for a 3-1 advantage before added a pair of runs in the eighth and an unearned run in the ninth for a 6-2 lead. The Lake Monsters, who had just two hits over the first eight innings, got back-to-back singles to open the bottom of the ninth before a Wyatt Patchett (Le Moyne) three-run homer cut the deficit to 6-5.
Vermont got the tying run into scoring position with two outs on a O’Brien double, but Rox reliever Ben Waterman got gloved a high bouncer and threw to first for the final out of the game.
