BURLINGTON, VT —  Tommy Googins knocked in the only run of the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning and four Lake Monster pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout as Vermont defeated the Norwich Sea Unicorns 1-0 in Futures League action Wednesday night at historic Centennial Field. 

Norwich opened the top of the fourth with a double, single and double, but did not score as the leadoff hitter was gunned down at third trying to stretch the double into a triple. After the single and double put runners on second and third, Vermont starter Will Harrigan (Columbia) got out of jam with a lineout and flyout.

Mark Quatrani (Cornell) reached to leadoff the bottom of the fourth on a fielding error, advanced to second on a two-out walk and scored on Googins (Princeton) RBI groundball single to center.

Harrigan retired the first nine Norwich batters in the game before working out of the fourth inning jam, finishing his start with 4 ⅓ scoreless innings on three hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Matt Minio (New Haven) struckout three in 2 ⅔ inning to earn the win, while Sean Gamble (Minnesota State) and Wyatt Cameron (Central Connecticut) one scoreless inning each.

  • Vermont’s only hit after the 4th inning was a Quatrani infield single in 8th
  • Norwich just 2 hits after the 4th inning, a 1-out single in 6th and 2-out infield single in 8th

  • The victory snapped an 8-game regular-season losing streak to Norwich for Vermont, which had not beaten the Sea Unicorns since May 25, 2023
