BURLINGTON, VT — Westfield scored single runs in four straight innings to snap a 2-2 tie and reliever Jake Jachym limited Vermont to three hits over six scoreless innings as the Starfires completed a series sweep of the Lake Monsters with a 6-2 Futures League victory Sunday evening at historic Centennial Field.
Westfield took a 2-0 lead in the fourth on a Luke Yuhasz two-run single, but the Lake Monsters tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a Jackson Sirois (Virginia) RBI double and Owen McKiernan (Tufts) sacrifice fly.
The Sirois RBI double was the only hit allowed by Westfield starter Sam Formus over the first three innings, though he did issue four walks and hit two batters. Jachym came on in relief after the RBI double, allowing a walk and hit batter in the inning, before retiring 16 of the final 19 batters he faced.
The Starfires took the lead on a RBI single in the fifth from Chandler Murray, who added another RBI single in the seventh, while Westfield also scored on a fielder’s choice in the sixth and a wild pitch in the eighth.
