BURLINGTON, VT —
The Norwich Sea Unicorns used a pair of two-run doubles in the top of the 10th inning to beat the Vermont Lake Monsters 12-9 as both teams combined for 35 hits in the Futures League contest Saturday night on the Delta Dental Diamond at historic Centennial Field.
Norwich scored one in each of the first fourth innings to take a 4-3 lead, then got a two-out solo homer, walk and two-run homer in the fifth before adding another single run in the top of the sixth for an 8-4 lead.
Vermont had taken a 3-2 lead with three runs in the second on a Tyler Harmony (Northeastern) RBI single and Tommy Popoff (Binghamton) two-run double. Popoff added another RBI double in the fourth to tie the game 4-4 before the Sea Unicorns got the three runs on homers in the fifth and run in sixth.
Lake Monsters rallied to tie game 8-8 with two runs in the sixth beginning with a Sam Cavossa (Saint Michael’s) leadoff triple/throwing error plating the first run and Hunter Kingsbury (Bryant) adding an RBI double. Shaun McMillan (St. John’s) got Vermont within a run in the seventh with an RBI double before the Lake Monsters tied the game in the eighth on a fielder’s choice grounder after back-to-back singles from Kingsbury and Cooper Berry (Pomona Pitzer).
After Norwich four-run 10th, Vermont got one run back on a wild pitch/throwing error scoring placed runner Will Mahala from second base. The game ended with two runners on when Popoff’s bid for a third extra base hit was caught on a diving catch by Norwich centerfielder Gavinb O’Brien.
