HARTFORD, CT — Jeremy Sosa went 3-for-5 with three RBI, including a two-run homer in the top of the ninth, while Bryan Richman was 4-for-5 and Sam Cavossa 3-for-6 to lead the Vermont Lake Monsters to an 13-5 in Futures League victory over the Westfield Starfires on Tuesday afternoon at Dunkin Park.
Vermont trailed 3-0 after the first and 4-1 after two innings before tying the game with three runs in the top of the third inning on RBI singles from Leandro Guevara (AIC) and Cooper Berry (Pomona Pitzer) sandwiched around a Sosa (Manhattan) sacrifice fly.
The Lake Monsters took a 5-4 lead in the sixth on a Hunter Kingsbury (Bryant) sacrifice fly and then a 6-5 advantage in the eighth on a Shaun McMillan (St. John’s) sacrifice fly. Sosa gave Vermont a three-run cushion with his two-run homer in the Lake Monsters seven-run ninth inning, which included an RBI single from Sam Cavossa and two-run single from Richman (Cal Poly Pomona).
