WORCESTER, MA — Trevor Cohen’s two-out RBI triple in the top of the 10th inning gave the Vermont Lake Monsters a 5-4 extra-inning victory over the Worcester Bravehearts Thursday night at Fitton Field in a Futures League broadcast live on NESN. Vermont and Worcester are now tied for first-place in the FCBL with identical 28-14 records.

The Bravehearts had tied the game 4-4 with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth inning before Colin Barcz (Vanderbilt) doubled with one out in the 10th and pinch runner Kyle McCausland (Middlebury) scored on Cohen’s (Rutgers) RBI triple to center. Sean Gamble (Minnesota State) worked around a leadoff walk in bottom 10th to earn his second save.

Vermont had built a 2-0 lead on a Jordan Kang (Harvard) two-out RBI double in first and Jack sacrifice fly in second inning after back-to-back one-out singles from Devan Kodali (Vanderbilt) and Cohen.

Winnay and Kyle Lodise (Augusta) both had two-out RBI singles in the fourth inning for a Lake Monsters 4-1 lead, but the Lake Monsters defense committed five errors leading to all four Braveheart runs being unearned including runs in second and seventh before two-run ninth.

Starter Evan Maloney (Rhode Island) charged with one unearned run on two hits with one walk and six strikeouts over six innings, allowing two-out singles in first and third innings before retiring the final 10 batters. Maloney has not allowed an earned run over last four starts (23 innings) to lower ERA to league-leading 1.84 overall.

Lake Monsters open a five-day homestand with a single-game against the Nashua Silver Knights 6:35pm on Friday.
