BURLINGTON, VT — With the 2023 Minor League season winding down, here is a look at each of the four “Futures League-era” Vermont Lake Monsters drafted over the past three years and how they fared during the 2023 season.
Owen Kellington ’21, who was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the fourth round of the 2021 MLB draft, spent the entire 2023 season with the Bradenton Pirates in the Single-A Florida State League.
The U-32 standout finished 1-4 with a 3.94 ERA in 23 appearances (18 starts) for Bradenton, allowing 62 hits with 50 walks and 90 strikeouts over 80 innings pitched. In four August outings, he was 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA, giving up just two earned runs on 10 hits with 16 strikeouts in 16 innings.
Chris Clark ’21, a 2023 fifth round pick of the Los Angeles Angels out of Harvard, made six starts for Single-A California League’s Inland Empire. He finished 0-2 with a 4.66 ERA with five walks and 22 strikeouts over 19 1/3 innings in the six outings between August 3rd (3 SO in 2 perfect IP) and September 6th (4 1/3 scoreless innings with 5 K’s).
Tommy Hawke ’22, a 6th-round pick by Cleveland after leading Wake Forest to the College World Series, hit .235 (4-for-17) with five runs, one double and two RBI in five games played for the Arizona Complex League (ACL) Guardians August 8-19.
Zach Fogell ’22 made three appearances in the Red Sox system after being taken in the 18th-round by Boston out of the University of Connecticut. After one hit, one walk and one strikeout in a scoreless inning for the Florida Complex League (FCL) Red Sox on August 22nd, he made two appearances with the Single-A Salem Red Sox in the Carolina League (1 H, 3 SO in 2 scoreless innings August 31st and 1 unearned run with 1 walk in 1 2/3 innings September 5th).
