BURLINGTON, VT — The Vermont Lake Monsters scored an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning on a Tyler Favretto RBI single for a 1-0 Futures League victory over the Westfield Starfires in a game that was shortened to five innings due to rain Sunday evening at historic Centennial Field.
Vermont starter Ethan Bowen (Rutgers) scattered three hits over four innings with two walks and five strikeouts. He worked out of a first-n-third no-out jam in the second with the help of a pickoff at first base for the first out.
First eight Lake Monster batters of the game were retired in order before an Eric Becker (Virginia) two-out infield single and a fielding error on a Tommy Martin (Yale) grounder to third was followed by Favretto’s (Kansas Wesleyan) RBI groundball single to left.
Reliever Ethan Mishri (Tulane) gave up back-to-back one-out singles in the fifth, but got out of that jam with a strikeout and groundout. The game was stopped in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of runners on base after a two-out fielding error and officially called just over an hour later.
