BURLINGTON, VT — Silas Reed did not allow a hit over the first five innings and the Lake Monsters scored three runs on three straight singles in the fourth to help lead Vermont to a 5-3 Futures League victory over the Westfield Starfires Sunday evening at historic Centennial Field.

The only Westfield baserunner over the first five innings came on a leadoff walk that was quickly erased on a double play. Reed (Tufts) struckout seven over the first five innings, which included striking out the side in the first and fourth innings.

Lake Monsters led 1-0 in the fourth when, with two outs and a runner on first, Vermont got a four straight singles including RBI singles from Antonio Gianni (Central Arizona), Khal Coney (Trinity U) and Kyle Lodise (Augusta) for 4-0 advantage.

Westfield got its first hit of the game to start the sixth inning off Reed, who then allowed two more singles to load the bases with one out. After getting a short flyout to center, Reed gave up a bases clearing double to Nick Serce to plate the Starfires three runs.

That double would be Westfield’s last baserunner of game as Reed, Sean Gamble (Minnesota State) and Wyatt Cameron (Central Connecticut) combined to retire the final 10 batters of the game for Vermont (7-4)
