BURLINGTON, VT — Westfield pitchers Tim Krol and Alex Perez each tossed four shutout innings to hold the Lake Monsters scoreless over the first eight frames as the Starfires held on for a 4-2 Futures League victory over Vermont Saturday night at historic Centennial Field.
The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when Westfield loaded the bases with no outs on a hit batter, single and walk before Nick Serce scored on a 6-4-3 double play induced by Vermont starter Patric Menk (Virginia), who allowed just the one run on three hits over five innings.
The Starfires added three more runs, two of them unearned runs in the seventh to increase their lead to 4-0. The Lake Monsters got some offense in the ninth with back-to-back one-out singles and a walk to load the bases, then scored on a Francis Ferguson (Eastern Nazarene) RBI forceout and Tommy Martin (Yale) two-out RBI single.
Antonio Perrotta (Virginia), representing the winning run at the plate, then flew out to leftfield to end the game, snapping a three-game winning streak for Vermont (6-4)
