Vermont 4-0 & 10-2 Wins July 8th at Nashua

NASHUA, NH — After four pitchers combined on four-hits shutout in the opener, the Lake Monsters scored a season-high eight runs in the top of the sixth inning of the nightcap as Vermont extended its winning streak to eight straight with 4-0 and 10-2 victories over the Nashua Silver Knights in a Futures League doubleheader Wednesday night at Holman Stadium.

Vermont trailed 2-0 in game two of the twinbill when Travis Stroh (CVU/Dayton) smacked a two-out, two-run homer (his first of the season) over the fence in left field to tie the game. The Lake Monsters then sent 12 batters to the plate to score a season-best eight runs in the top of the sixth. 

A Hunter Strohm (Mississippi State) leadoff double, an error and back-to-back walks forced home the go ahead run to start the inning. Zach Geertsma (Mississippi State) and Tommy Popoff (Binghamton) added two-run singles before  RBI singles from Stroh and Strohm around a Bryan Richman (Cal Poly Pomona) RBI groundout. 

Starter Ethan Freed (Quinnipiac) struck out seven of 11 batters faced over the first three innings before allowing four straight one-out base hits in the fourth that gave Nashua the 2-0 advantage. Brett Gable (Harvard) got a strikeout with the bases loaded to end the fourth and Brady Lane (Brandeis) came on to get final out with bases loaded in fifth before a scoreless sixth to earn his league-leading fourth win. 

In the doubleheader’s lidlifter, Geertsma gave Vermont a 1-0 lead in the top of the  third with a two-out RBI single before the Lake Monsters scored three times in the fourth when six straight batters reached safely with one out including Jake Dunlap (Catawba) RBI double,  Strohm (Mississippi State) RBI single and James Henshon (Tufts) RBI single.

Starter Justin Sweeney (Saint Joseph’s) hit the first two Nashua batters of the game, but settled down to retire 11 of the next 13 to finish with two hits allowed and three strikeouts over four scoreless innings to earn the victory. .
