Win Streak At Nine After 9-1 Win Friday

BURLINGTON, VT — The Vermont Lake Monsters opened a three-game weekend series with their ninth consecutive victory with a 9-4 Futures Leaguer win over the Westfield Starfires on Friday night on Delta Dental Diamond at Centennial Field. 

Vermont starter Reed Stygles (BFA St. Albans/USC Aiken) allowed 3 straight singles and a one-out bases loaded walk to start the game, but settled down to retire the next nine batters in order and then worked out of a two-out bases loaded jam in the fourth to finish off his 4-inning outing (4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 SO).

Meanwhile the Lake Monsters were building a 6-1 advantage with three runs in both the third and fourth innings. James Henshon (Tufts) and Jake Dunlap (Catawba) had RBI singles in the 3rd, Tyler Wiltsey (Rutgers) an RBI double and Hunter Strohm (Mississippi State) an RBI single in the fourth, while Bryan Richman (Cal Poly Pomona) had RBI groundouts to second base in both innings. 

Brenden Walsh (Endicott) added an RBI single in the fifth and an RBI double in seventh as Vermont built a 9-1 lead. Reliever Chase Borrows (Babson) faced the minimum over his first three innings (fielding error erased on pickoff), but gave up a single, single, three-run homer to start the eighth before retiring next three Starfires.
