Vermont Falls 8-6 To Westfield Wednesday

HARTFORD`, CT — Westfield scored runs in each of the first five innings, including single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to snap a 6-6 tie as the Starfires defeated the Vermont Lake Monsters 8-6 in Futures League action Wednesday afternoon at Dunkin’ Park.

With the help of three Vermont errors, the Starfires scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning before the Lake Monsters responded with five runs in the top of the second. The first two runs came on Brad Johnston’s (Swarthmore) first home run of the season, a blast over the 362 marker into the leftcenter field pavilion.

The other three runs in the inning were unearned, the first coming on a sacrifice bunt throwing error and two more scoring on a wild pitch/throwing error combination. Westfield tied the game in the bottom of the second on a two-out, two-run double before taking a 6-5 lead in the third on three straight two-out singles. 

Hunter Strohm (Mississippi State) tied the game in the fourth with a solo home run to left, his first homer of the season for the Lake Monsters, but Vermont would go scoreless on just three hits over the final five innings. Westfield took the lead for good in the fourth with a leadoff double and walk before adding a two-out RBI single in the fifth.
