BURLINGTON, VT — Brody Shawn allowed one run over four innings and Joe Marini went 2-for-2 with two walks as the Vermont Lake Monsters earned a split of the two Futures League games Thursday night with a 7-2 victory over Norwich after the Sea Unicorns had earlier won the completion of a suspended game from Wednesday 8-4 at historic Centennial Field.
Joey Gale (Saint Joseph’s) had an RBI single and Zander Teator (Babson) an RBI double to give Vermont a 2-0 lead in the third inning of the second game. The Lake Monsters added four more runs (three unearned) in the fourth, including a Wyatt Patchett (Le Moyne) RBI single and a pair of bases loaded hit batters.
Shawn (Wake Forest) did not allow a hit over the first three innings before allowing two, including an RBI single, in the fourth before leaving the bases loaded with a strikeout and pop out to end the inning. Three Vermont relievers tossed one inning, including scoreless innings from Charles Kutz (Middlebury) and Eddie Kaftan (Catholic).
Norwich led the first game 4-0 when suspended Wednesday in the top of the third with two runners and no outs. The Sea Unicorns quickly added four more runs in the inning for an 8-run advantage. Vermont cut the deficit in half on a Tyler Favretto (Kansas Wesleyan) sacrifice fly in the fourth inning and three runs in fifth, including a Jack Rickheim (Harvard) two-run double.
