boxscore

BURLINGTON, VT — Starter Shamus Kelly and five relievers combined for 14 strikeouts as the Vermont Lake Monsters rallied from an early two-run deficit for a 5-2 Futures League victory over the Worcester Bravehearts Tuesday night on Delta Dental Diamond at Centennial Field.

The Bravehearts got a two-run homer in the top of the second inning off Kelly (Wesleyan),  who allowed five hits with four strikeouts over the first four innings. Each of the five Vermont relievers followed with a scoreless inning, combining to give just two hits (sixth and ninth innings) with one walk and 10 strikeouts.

Vermont got an unearned run in the third inning on a two-out throwing error and then tied the game in the fourth on a Malcolm Whitfield (Tufts) sacrifice fly after back-to-back singles to open the frame. Patrick Shrake (Colby) led off the seventh with a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a James Henshon (Tufts) sacrifice fly to give the Lake Monsters a 3-2 lead.

Shrake produced an insurance run for Vermont in the eight with an RBI ground-rule double down the rightfield line scoring Thomas Moss (Trinity TX), who was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a single by Whitfield (who later scored the second run of the inning on a passed ball).
