boxscore
BURLINGTON, VT — Vermont scored a run in four different innings and five Lake Monster relievers combined to retire the final 14 Westfield batters for a 4-1 Futures League victory over the Starfires on Delta Dental Diamond at Centennial Field in front of 3,069 spectators.Â
After a Westfield two-out RBI single in the top of the second, the Lake Monsters quickly tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a James Henshon (Tufts) RBI groundout to plate Jake Dunlap (Catawba) who had led off the inning with a single in his Vermont debut.
Lake Monsters took the lead in fourth as Travis Stroh (CVU/Fairleigh Dickinson) walked with two outs, advanced to third on a single and scored on a wild pitch. Vermont added an insurance run in the sixth on a Henshon sacrifice fly and another in the seventh on a Dunlap RBI groundout.
Vermont reliever Albert Savino (UConn Avery Point) gave up back-to-back one-out singles in the fifth before retiring the final two batters of the inning. The Starfires went down in order over the next four frames with a 1-2-3 inning by Doug Pyle (Azusa Pacific), Kevin Rusinak (Quinnipiac), Ethan Freed (Harvard) and Sam Lebrecque (Oberlin).Â
