Lake Monsters Blank Lowell 7-0 On Sunday

BURLINGTON, VT — Vermont starter Alvin Gomez and four relievers combined on a three-hit shutout, while James Henshon went 3-for-3 with a walk, run and RBI as the Lake Monsters improved their Futures League first-place record to 14-7 overall with a 7-0 victory over the Lowell Spinners Sunday evening on Delta Dental Diamond at Centennial Field.Â
Gomez (AIC) hit the second batter of the game and gave up a two-out single in the first before retiring the final 13 Spinner batters he faced for five scoreless innings on one hit with no walks and four strikeouts. Relievers Justin Sweeney (Saint Joseph’s), Brandon Rovinelli (Columbia), Declan Musselman (Hood) and Brady Lane (Brandeis) followed with one scoreless inning apiece for the shutout.
Vermont scored a run in the bottom of the first on a Hunter Strohm (Mississippi State) RBI groundout, then added two more runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings. Henshon (Tufts) had an RBI single in the third, while Patrick Shrake (Colby) added an RBI infield single in the fifth. Vermont loaded the bases with one out in the sixth and scored a pair of runs on a Brenden Walsh (Endicott) RBI forceout and throwing error for the 7-0 advantage.Â
It was the first Centennial Field game between Vermont and Lowell since August 24, 2019 when both franchises were members of the New York-Penn League. The Spinners are 6-17 to start their first season in the Futures League.
